When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention
Call 911 or Go to the Emergency Room if:
- You cannot bear any weight on the affected leg
- Your knee is severely deformed
- You heard a loud pop followed by immediate pain
- Your knee is rapidly swelling
- You have severe pain and cannot move your knee
Immediate Actions (RICE Protocol)
Rest
- Stop all activity immediately
- Avoid putting weight on the affected knee
- Use crutches if available
Ice
- Apply ice for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours
- Use a cloth barrier between ice and skin
- Continue for the first 48-72 hours
Compression
- Use an elastic bandage
- Wrap from below the knee to above
- Ensure wrap is snug but not tight
Elevation
- Keep knee above heart level
- Use pillows for support
- Maintain elevation when resting
