Patient Preparation

Pre-appointment Instructions

• Fast for 6 hours minimum before scan
• Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
• Continue prescribed medications (except insulin)
• Maintain hydration with water only

Blood Glucose Requirements

• Target glucose level: <150 mg/dL
• Reschedule if >200 mg/dL
• Document all glucose readings

FDG Administration

Dosing Guidelines

• Standard dose: 0.14-0.21 mCi/kg
• Maximum dose: 20 mCi
• Pediatric dose: adjust per ALARA principles

Administration Protocol

1. Verify patient identity
2. Check blood glucose
3. Place IV access
4. Administer FDG via slow IV push
5. Record administration time

Uptake Phase

Patient Management

• Quiet uptake room
• Minimal patient movement
• Temperature control (20-22°C)
• 60-minute uptake period

Image Acquisition

Positioning

• Arms above head when possible
• Head-first supine position
• Use positioning aids as needed

Scan Parameters

• CT parameters:
  • 120 kV
  • 30-250 mA (dose modulation)
  • 3.75 mm slice thickness
• PET parameters:
  • 2-4 minutes per bed position
  • Matrix size: 128×128

Quality Control

Image Review

• Check for motion artifacts
• Verify anatomical alignment
• Review attenuation correction

Documentation

• Record all technical parameters
• Document any deviations
• Include quality assessment notes
