Introduction

This exercise program is designed to help you recover successfully after your joint replacement surgery. Following these guidelines will help improve your strength, flexibility, and function.

General Guidelines

  • Start exercises gradually
  • Perform exercises 2-3 times daily
  • Stop if you experience severe pain
  • Ice the joint for 15-20 minutes after exercising

Phase 1: Immediate Post-Surgery (Days 1-7)

Ankle Pumps

  • Flex and point your feet
  • Perform 10 repetitions every hour while awake
  • Helps prevent blood clots

Quadriceps Sets

  1. Tighten thigh muscles
  2. Hold for 5-10 seconds
  3. Repeat 10 times

Gluteal Sets

  1. Squeeze buttocks together
  2. Hold for 5-10 seconds
  3. Repeat 10 times

Phase 2: Early Recovery (Weeks 2-4)

Straight Leg Raises

  1. Lie on back
  2. Keep operated leg straight
  3. Raise leg 6 inches
  4. Hold for 5 seconds
  5. 10 repetitions, 3 sets

Heel Slides

  1. Slide heel toward buttocks
  2. Hold for 5 seconds
  3. 10 repetitions

Phase 3: Progressive Strengthening (Weeks 4-12)

Standing Exercises

  • Mini squats
  • Heel raises
  • Side leg raises

Walking Program

  • Start with 5-10 minutes
  • Gradually increase duration
  • Aim for 20-30 minutes daily

Warning Signs
