What is Diabetes Insipidus?

Diabetes Insipidus (DI) is a rare condition that affects the body's water balance, causing excessive thirst and urination. Unlike diabetes mellitus, DI is not related to blood sugar levels.

Types of Diabetes Insipidus

• Central DI: Caused by insufficient vasopressin production
• Nephrogenic DI: Results from kidney resistance to vasopressin
• Gestational DI: Occurs during pregnancy
• Primary Polydipsia: Excessive fluid intake disrupting normal balance

Common Symptoms

• Extreme thirst (polydipsia)
• Frequent urination (polyuria)
• Production of large amounts of dilute urine
• Dehydration risk
• Disrupted sleep due to nighttime urination

Diagnosis

• Water deprivation test
• Blood and urine tests
• MRI of the brain (for central DI)
• Genetic testing (in some cases)

Treatment Options

1. Central DI:

   • Desmopressin (DDAVP) replacement
   • Available as nasal spray or tablets

2. Nephrogenic DI:

   • Dietary salt restriction
   • Thiazide diuretics
   • NSAIDs in some cases

• Maintain adequate fluid intake
• Monitor urine output
• Regular medical check-ups
• Wear medical ID jewelry
• Adjust medication as needed
