What is a Biopsy?

A biopsy is a medical procedure where a small sample of tissue is removed from the body for detailed examination. This examination is typically performed under a microscope by a pathologist to diagnose various medical conditions, particularly cancer.

Types of Biopsies

1. Needle Biopsy

  • Fine-needle aspiration (FNA): Uses a very thin needle to extract cells
  • Core needle biopsy: Removes a small cylinder of tissue using a larger needle
  • Vacuum-assisted biopsy: Uses suction to collect multiple tissue samples

2. Surgical Biopsy

  • Incisional biopsy: Removes a portion of the suspicious area
  • Excisional biopsy: Removes the entire suspicious area

3. Endoscopic Biopsy

Uses a flexible tube with a camera to access internal organs and collect tissue samples

The Biopsy Process

Before the Procedure

  1. Medical history review
  2. Physical examination
  3. Imaging tests (if necessary)
  4. Fasting or medication adjustments as directed

During the Procedure

  • Local or general anesthesia administration
  • Tissue sample collection
  • Wound closure (if needed)

After the Procedure

  • Recovery monitoring
  • Pain management
  • Care instructions
  • Results waiting period (typically 2-10 days)

Risks and Complications

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Tissue damage (rare)

When Results Arrive

Your healthcare provider will:

  • Explain the findings
  • Discuss diagnosis
  • Recommend treatment options
